i don know if this has been done before but i thought id try to see if anyone could remember the tank that got you started. what did you have and in what size aquarium. why did you get into aquariums etc.
here goes me first. when i was young id always watch ocean docos on tv. i loved to sit there and learn all about the different marine life. and when i was at school my dad would tape them and id watch them when id get home. thats kind of where my fascination with fish began. in fact my favourite was the flounder. i loved how they have two eyes on one side, swam sideways and could camouflage themselves.
then at about 10 or 11 my dads friend gave me a little 20L tank with a mirrored back an a fish detail on the front. any ways, she gave me about 10 mosquito fish and a couple baby goldfish from her outside pond. i think after we set it up in the kitchen i spent about an hr sitting in front of the tank just watching the fish.
ever since that day iv always had an aquarium. but not always fish. iv had turtles, yabbies, frogs and even a scorpion. i cought the scorpion in my backyard and kept it for a month b feeding it on cockroaches. nowa days i have all sorts of fish and some shrimps. and have only recently tried my hand at breeding. so far ive lernt alot from breeding my red jewel cichlids and hope to keep learning with the convict cichlids iv just bought. i know both would breed in a muddy puddle but they are good starter fish for breeding. and no matter what, when they do breed you always feel good about your accomplishment.
well thanks for reading and i hope to read your story.

What a great question,

Mine was a 60L..I never knew that then lol..
With an under gravel filter...& a small clear wool filed corner filter...
It all started with an axolotl, When it grew to the size of a small mullet, I gave it to the local aquarium they had a huge display roon full of different tanks..My Axle lived there till t died , years later...
After Axle...I had some of the common fish, the odd Gourami, many Tetras & I always had a Fighter..Can't remember what else lived in there, that was a loooong time ago now...actually 20 years ago

My aquarium addiction started in the 60s at age 7 or 8 ,my parents used to go visiting their friends & one of them had an aquarium in the lounge room.
Apparently i used to stare at the tank for hours & when it was time to leave i used to put up a bit of fuss.
At home i had a collection of glass jars with some sand & local water plants & all sorts of water bugs & small fish.
My first aquarium my dad got it from an auction sale ,it was about 12 inches long & metal framed & putty was used to seal the glass.
Ever since then i have had at least 1 aquarium & at one time over 50 in the garage.
For me at least aquariums are for life & i love all the advancements in the last 10 years or so.
Still remember when the undergravel filter was about as high tech as it got..LOL

cheers

My first tank was a 3ft with undergravel filter. I bought 2 angelfish which turned out to be a pair and I used to breed them and sell the fry back to the lfs.
This was about 30 years or more ago now. Aquarium keeping was pretty basic way back then.

My first was a 2footer which was given to me by my aunt about 15 years ago, it had platies and mollys in it. I still had that tank up until about two weeks ago when i gave it to a mate.

Mr first was a 30cm tiny little thing, with a black moor and gold fish + one evil sucker mouth catfish.

My old man kept saying, if you can keep that clean I'll get you a bigger one. Joke was on me, a larger tank is easier to keep.

Hahahah, good one Mick.

I've been told the silicon in tanks only lasts approx 15yrs so moving your tank on Speedy was probably not a bad idea.

I was about 4 or 5 when I started into fish. Mine was a 2ft tank with large metal bracings. Had a clear corner filter and undergravel filter. (very high tech ) The heater I had was set at one temp and you were unable to change the temp at all. Weird part is I still have one of those heaters. It still works but I wouldnt be game to use it now

Had guppies and some other fish can't remember now to long ago Oddly enough the guppies thrived back then now I cant keep one alive longer then a month

Didn't even know they made heaters with only one temp back in the day. Wonder what the temp was...

the temp was set at 80F

To bad if you wanted another temp as that was it

I still have my first tank

It sits on my desk at work full of shrimp

it is a small tank, about 38ltrs. It has gone through many different stages. It started out as a cold water tank for some black widows. then i got a heater and went for the standard mollys, pladys and neons...oh, and bristlenose...where it all began!!! when the bristlenose bred i had to figure out what I was to do. a big ask for a 9 year old with no cash! so i took the bristlenose and the parents back to the shop and got some neons instead. then I moved to chile for a few years (98-2000) and put the tank into storage (the fish went to a friend, dont think they would have done well in storage for two years haha). when i got back I set it up again and got mollys and bristlenose and the damn things bred again, but this time I was ready for it and got another tank...and the MTS took hold!! the rest, as they say is history!

my first fish tank...
hmmm

well it was one of those plastic boxes with the coloured lid. i was so excited when i saw guppies at the LFS, so i begged mum to buy me some.
me and my sister both bought some guppies, and to make the tank more interesting, i put some reeds from my pond in the tank.
and i was overly excited when i found my first baby! didnt know what in the world it was at first.. came screaming to my sister when i figured it out!
soon i thought i would experiment with my guppies.. so i piled about 50 river pebbles in my guppy tank, which i found to be very disastrous, it fell and killed 1 of my guppies and trapped another for a couple of days .
then i though it would be cool to put one in a tin containor in the boiling hot sun and leaving it for a couple of days..
come back to check on it, all the water is gona and the poor thing is shrivled up !!
that was my fun, and rather sad first experience with fish.
