umm peoples i have a big problem i woke up this morning and all of my shrimp are dead excet for 3 so far and the ottos ar fine

i did do a waterchange yesterday but they seemed fine when i put them back in because i also re did the tank so tey were all out

have they died from stress?

or is it something else

just so you's know i found them all dead on the bottom of the tank and the survivers were on the thermometer and the top of the heater

and i did put sand in from my old tank

sorry guys for not making much sense but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks

I dont know a hell of a lot about shrimp but i would suggest adding the sand has made a change too dramatic for the shrimp to handle in one go. Possible changes in ph etc.

I would like to put some natural shell grit into my tanks to assist in stabilising ph but not sure if it will make too big of a change for my fish to handle in one go

yeah that is what i am thinking and now the remaining 3 are dead as well but the ottos are fine

Sorry to hear the news Tyler.

I've discovered after lots of advice that you can't just do an ordinary water change with shrimp. They're too sensitive. So I have a bucket of water sitting around aging and when I do a WC not only do I use the aged water but I put water conditioner in as well. I had major losses from the 2 batches I received from Jen but enough survived to get things going again. They died slowly over time - not nice to watch! But they're all ok now. Hope your survivors keep on surviving TK.

Plus Jen's tanks are in 24/7 aircon and mine are not so we think water temp had a lot to do with it as well.

umm ok cool i think it was because the water i put in was too different so they couldn't adjust because when i tested the water before it was down to 6.4ph so that is probably it so if they de they die ill just have to get the water back up to 7 and kepp it there for a while before i buy anymore at least it will give the plants time to grow and the ottos are still fine thank you for your help guys

lucky i didnt get any crystal shrimp yet lol

    Sorry to hear Tyler
Devastating news actually, sounds like the inclusion of the sand has altered the water chemistry all right. Shrimp are sensitive to altered water temps, ammonias, NitrItes, nitAtes & pH .
If your getting any more, I would suggest you do a whole lot more research about the care of shrimp also different shrimp often need different water conditions also..

My shrimp have almost all died too... I suspect dramatic changes in temperature. I haven't got a proper heater in there at the moment, so the temps go from about 20 if I run the air con to about 30 when it's off during a hot day.

I've got a heater on order, and will be moving my shrimp to a bigger tank, so hopefully that'll help my few remaining survivors (I think there's 1 blue shrimp and 1 glass left ).
